Helping Teens Monetize Their Talents Using MemberVault

My daughter, Michaela, has been a digital artist since she was 14 years old (now almost 20), drawing avatars, printable merchandise and My Little Pony caricatures on her Wacom MobileStudio Pro 16 digital drawing pen computer. She primarily finds customers on the DeviantArt site who commission her for custom drawings from $25 - $100 each and then rate her turnaround services (currently at a 5-star rating). With her customers’ blessing, she streams her drawing sessions live on Picarto.TV and has grown a following of over 1.6K viewers on Deviant Art and over 63.6K page views. In addition, she has 10 Patreons who support her each month.
The first time I watched her at work, she was typing with her right hand WHILE drawing with her left hand, replying to her viewers comments while continuing to draw using her favorite drawing software, Paint Tool SAI. She has also branched out to try learning Photoshop and Clip Studio Paint. With this specialized niche and viewership, she has already created the foundation for a thriving business that most online entrepreneurs only dream of, saving up for her first car, apartment and college tuition.
To further expand her reach, she attends about 5 weekend conventions each year around the US, selling her printed posters, backpacks, buttons and charms. Each time she comes home making a killing selling these low-ticket items, I keep telling her how much further her reach and deeper her sales margins would be if she created an online course or series on MemberVault that parents could purchase for their kids. Plus, she could skip lugging around two suitcases full of merchandise when she travels!

As a mom, I must be careful not to push too much, too hard. She kept saying she wasn’t ready or had so much one-off client commission work to finish that she didn’t have time to record videos for a course. Inside I kept thinking, “If only you knew how much you could blow up your bank account with a series of training courses!” However, as much as I tried to keep my unsolicited parenting advice in check and to respect her readiness to move her business to the next level, I’d periodically slip up and say, “But just think how much you’d make if you had a course to sell!”
Finally, last night she told me she’s ready to try creating an online course or series for parents to buy for their kids to teach them how to draw using digital tools. I recommended she start with a simple picture of 5 drawn characters together and then break those out into a 5-module course, using each module to show how to draw each character and then separate lessons with the breakdown of drawing each character’s features. Then for a compelling lead magnet, she could use her Drawing Reference Sheets to show multiple angles of the same drawn character, something that every budding artist needs to learn to draw.
This is such an exciting age we live in with all the tools at our fingertips to start online businesses. I am blessed to walk alongside my young adult kids to cultivate their talents and turn those into thriving businesses online!
